QUITTING AND STAYING QUIT IS POSSIBLE!

Nicotine dependence is a powerful foe! Nicotine operates both as a stimulant and a depressant. A feat of which few drugs can boast! That makes it a singular ally where mood and mind control is concerned. Unfortunately, the cost of this control is likely to be your life or at least a profound reduction in its quality. The cost will also include diminishing the quality of life of those around you, who are forced to breathe in what you breathe out, along with what burns freely from the lit substance. And, if you smoke 20 to 30 cigarettes a day, it is costing you about $2800 a year and up!

"Step Ahead's performance in implementing our Tobacco Dependency Treatment Grant far exceeded our expectations. You have a unique ability to educate people about this issue and motivate them to change. Mountainside (live link) is indebted to you for your thoroughness, professionalism and extraordinary sensitivity in the creation of our new tobacco dependence component of treatment."

- Terence R. Dougherty, President, Mountainside Treatment Program, Canaan, CT.

CURRENT STATISTICS INDICATE THAT ONLY 5% OF SMOKERS WHO TRY TO QUIT ON THEIR OWN ARE SUCCESSFUL.

The evidence is clear that the best way to quit smoking or deal with other tobacco issues is with a solid support system. This support can include a professional counselor, self-help group involvement, understanding friends and the use of adjunct medication such as the transdermal patch to minimize the discomfort of withdrawal when you quit smoking. Dependence tends to feed on isolation. Give yourself the best chance of full recovery. Don't go it alone!

"SO WHAT SHOULD I DO?"

TOBACCO PROBLEMS IN YOUR COMPANY?

Do you own a company or are you associated with any corporation, healthcare facility or educational facility that is having difficulties establishing effective policies regarding tobacco use, particularly smoking?

We have reached a time in our social history when smoking is becoming increasingly undesirable. As business leaders, health and educational professionals and civil authorities recognize the inherent dangers connected with even the lightest tobacco use, the mandate grows for tobacco-free sites. Yet few people have either the commitment or expertise to address this mandate effectively. Could you use some assistance? LET STEP AHEAD HELP!

Step Ahead can evaluate your needs and make recommendations to meet those needs. We can implement those recommendations, if desirable. Step Ahead can help you to create policies and develop positive, proactive attitudes toward those policies among employees, staff members and patient populations. Step Ahead can provide treatment on or offsite for individuals or agency employees who want to quit smoking. We can supply educational presentations, workshops and materials to small groups or entire organizations, concerning tobacco use and the surrounding health, social and business issues. DON'T YOU HAVE ENOUGH TO DO? LET STEP AHEAD HELP!

CAN YOU AFFORD NOT TO OFFER TOBACCO EDUCATION FOR YOUR EMPLOYEES?

Did you know that

Over their lifetime cigarette smokers cost approximately $10,000 more in medical expenditures than nonsmokers?

Smokers are absent from work 6.5 days more per year than nonsmokers?

The indirect cost of lost productivity has been estimated at over $1000/year per smoking employee, excluding transfer payments such as sick pay and the cost of the impact on nonsmoking employees by Environmental Tobacco Smoke (ETS)?

Those exposed to ETS in the workplace for more than one year are twice as likely to take time off for illness?

Although many smokers feel their tobacco use is aiding their powers of concentration and creativity, this is usually far from the truth. The distractions and compromised circumstances caused by entering withdrawal are legendary, not to mention the necessity of interrupting your activity numerous times to ward off withdrawal (minimally every 25-35 minutes!)

As the above statistics indicate, smokers are a tremendous burden on places of employment. The burden takes the form of higher insurance costs, higher expense for sick time, nonsmoking employees picking up the slack for the smoker taking breaks, higher absentee rates and even pollution and fire damage to equipment and furnishings. And, smoking by healthcare professionals is unconscionable, given their responsibility as a role model for their patients or clients.

LET YOUR NEXT STEP BE TO STEP AHEAD, INC.

Step Ahead, Inc. was co-founded by recovering smokers Karen and Jim Mell. Both are certified addictions counselors, each with over 35 years of experience in the treatment field. Although tobacco is a relatively new concern of healthcare facilities and industry, Karen and Jim have over 25 years of experience addressing both the educational and treatment aspects of this major health issue, which places Step Ahead in the vanguard of agencies qualified to meet your individual or corporate needs.

Karen and Jim have been consultants for the Addressing Tobacco Project, Inc., the leading training program in the country for agencies and businesses dealing with tobacco issues. They were employed for many years at Little Hill-Alina Lodge, the first residential alcohol and other drug treatment program in the nation to become nicotine-free. Step Ahead implemented a grant from The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation for Mountainside Treatment Center in Canaan, CT, creating an integrated tobacco dependence treatment component for their residential chemical dependency program.
